Monday, April 12, 2021

Paulo Machado WELLESLEY HILLS, Mass. (April 12, 2021) — MassBay Community College is pleased to announce Paulo Machado, of Fall River, MA, has been named MassBay’s new Student Trustee.

Machado, who studies criminal justice, moved from Brazil almost 20 years ago. He came to MassBay as a part-time student taking night classes and working full-time during the day. After Machado received a promotion at his job, he left MassBay to focus on his new position. A few years later, he decided to come back to complete his goal of earning his degree. Starting with a few classes during the day, Machado said the change “made a huge impact on me as a student.” The following semester Machado became a full-time student and started to get involved in campus activities. He participated in the Leadership Engagement and Development (LEAD) program at MassBay and through this, became a peer tutor in the Academic Achievement Center. As a peer tutor, he focused on helping English Language Learners achieve their academic goals, as he is fluent in English, Portuguese, and Spanish. Machado is very dedicated to his studies, being named to the Dean’s List for three consecutive semesters and inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. When Machado is not studying, he volunteers his time as a chaplain at hospitals, nursing homes, and community-based churches and associations to help families in need.

“I love MassBay and I am proud to serve as Student Trustee. These professors and staff members have impacted my life. The people at MassBay have contributed to my growth and have helped me be a better person to make a positive difference in our society. I look forward to representing my fellow peers on the board,” Machado said.

Machado is a married father who has a ten-year-old daughter. In May, Machado will graduate with his associate’s degree and will transfer to the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth as a political science major, studying in the pre-law program. His future career goals include earning his bachelor’s degree and becoming a lawyer to advocate for minorities in his community and across the state.

Machado’s first Board of Trustees meeting was in December 2020.
