FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (May 7, 2026) — MassBay Community College is launching an Associate in Science Degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) to educate students in this highly skilled and in-demand field of ultrasound technology, helping address the growing need for diagnostic imaging professionals in the region. The DMS program combines classroom instruction, laboratory practice and supervised clinical experiences to prepare students for careers in medical imaging. Students can enroll now for classes that begin Sept. 8, 2026.

“We know that skilled medical professionals are in high demand in MetroWest, and this program will train health care workers who will make an immediate impact,” said David Podell, MassBay President. “The health care workforce of tomorrow is being trained at our new, state-of-the-art Framingham campus, which was designed to simulate a real-world medical setting. We look forward to working with our community partners to create a pipeline, and to providing students with the training and skills they need to achieve a well-paying, rewarding career in diagnostic medical sonography.”

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics for Diagnostic Medical Sonography, the average starting salary of diagnostic medical sonographers in Massachusetts was nearly $95,000 in April 2026. Employment in the field in Massachusetts is projected to grow by 23% from 2020 to 2030, with hundreds of available jobs right now.

Sonographers are highly skilled healthcare professionals who produce and evaluate diagnostic images of internal body structures to assist physicians in the assessment and diagnosis of medical conditions. This critical role requires a strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, and pathology, along with the ability to think critically in real time. Through extensive, hands-on clinical experience, sonographers learn to recognize normal and abnormal findings, evaluate ultrasound images as they are acquired, and apply clinical judgment to support accurate and timely patient care.

Prospective students interested in learning more about the program and how to enroll are encouraged to attend an upcoming virtual information session on May 18 or 22, 2026. Registration is available at MassBay Info Sessions.
