On December 27, 2020, the Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA) was signed into law. This new law supplements the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act), and permits the U.S. Department of Education to distribute additional funds to institutions of higher education in order to prevent, prepare for, and respond to coronavirus through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF), also called CARES 2 at MassBay Community College. A portion of the funds disbursed shall be used for making emergency assistance grants directly to students. As required by Federal law, priority for awarding emergency grants will be given to students with exceptional financial need, such as students who receive Pell Grants. However, students who are not Pell recipients or are enrolled exclusively in distance education courses are also eligible to apply for CARES 2 Student Emergency Grants.
CARES 2 Act FAQ (Frequently-Asked Questions)
ALL degree and certificate students are eligible including DACA, international, and undocumented students are eligible to apply. In order to be eligible for an emergency assistance grant, a student must have been and is enrolled in a program at MassBay and attended during the nationally declared emergency, which was declared on March 18th, 2020. Students who plan to enroll in future semesters should monitor the MassBay COVID Resource website for future semester CARES emergency grant assistance applications. Applications ARE semester specific. The Fall 2021 CARES 2 Student Emergency Grant Assistance Application will be available in June. Please be aware that Students who are undeclared, non-degree, and non-credit are not eligible for this funding.

How much can I apply for?
The maximum CARES 2 Student Emergency Grant amount a student can apply for is $500. A student is eligible for only one grant per semester, and only one application will be considered per student, per semester. A student must be currently enrolled for the summer semester for their application to be considered.

How long will it take to receive the money?
We anticipate a large volume of applications and will work to process the submissions as quickly as possible. It may take up to 15 business days for processing. Due to a high volume of applications, it is possible that processing times may be longer that what is stated above. If you have questions, please contact email@example.com. Are these funds taxable?

Will there be CARES 2 Student Emergency Funds available for Summer 2021 or Fall 2021?
At this time, we hope to be able to provide funding to students however we are unsure of what the demand will be on our CARES 2 funding allocation. Massachusetts Bay Community College has signed and returned to the Department the Certification and Agreement and the assurance that the institution has used the 100% of the allocated funds to provide Emergency Financial Aid Grants under the CRRSAA and ARP (a)(1) and (a)(4) programs. Emergency Financial Aid Grants are available to students who experiencing financial need due to the COVID19 pandemic. Students can request funds to help cover expenses that are made up of the MassBay Cost of Attendance (COA) categories such as: tuition, fees, books, technology, room, food, transportation, childcare, healthcare, and mental healthcare. The table below lists information regarding MassBay’s grant distribution:

Awards are being distributed by one method for Spring 2021 and Summer 2021 semesters:
Application method: Students who have financial need due to the COVID pandemic can submit an application for any of the MassBay Cost of Attendance categories through the CARES 2 Student Emergency Grant Assistance webpage. Students can seek information regarding the application process for these grant funds at the CARES 2 Student Emergency Grant Assistance webpage. Awards for Spring 2021 will not exceed $750.00 and Awards for Summer 2021 will not exceed $500 for refundable cost of attendance components and will cover any balance due for the summer 2021 semester and/or any past due balance related to attendance during the National COVID Pandemic Federal Emergency declared on March 13, 2020.
Students must meet the following criteria to be eligible.
- Be currently registered in an Associate or Certificate program;
- And are experiencing financial need due to the COVID19 pandemic of which the expenses that can be considered fall under the MassBay Cost of Attendance categories.
