MassBay Fun Facts: Treasurer of the Nursing Club, member of the International Club

Bio: Josephine Namubiru came to the United States with no family or friends, just the desire to further her education in healthcare to make a difference in other people’s lives.  In her home country of Uganda, Josephine earned her Bachelor degree in Environmental Health Science from Makerere University in Kampala. After she had her diploma in hand, she had the opportunity to volunteer in rural communities to improve people’s health and found her passion.  This experience ignited her desire to do more for the community, other than teach people about health education, she wanted to become a Nurse. While interning, she met a fellow intern from Massachusetts who explained she could begin a career in nursing and finish the program in 2-years at a community college. With a future sights set on nursing education in Massachusetts, Josephine found MassBay and connected with Claudia Ortiz in the MassBay Admissions Office.

Claudia helped Josephine navigate the application process, while providing long-distance support to ensure she was ready to move to America to continue her studies. Once here, Josephine got involved on campus between classes as an active part of the Nursing Club holding the position of Treasurer and also as a member of the International Club, even presenting at one of their monthly luncheons on the culture and country of Uganda. When she wasn’t on campus she worked as a Patient Care Assistant to fund her education.

Josephine recently earned her Associate in Nursing degree and is currently studying to take her NCLEX exam to become a Registered Nurse. She notes her favorite part of Massbay was her Nurse Pinning ceremony and walking across the stage at Commencement, “knowing that my dream was finally coming to reality.”
