Scholarships

For current and prospective MassBay students


Below are listed the scholarships available to MassBay students through the generous donations of MassBay alumni, faculty and staff, the MassBay Foundation, friends of MassBay and industry and community partners.

These scholarships provide MassBay students with support to help them achieve their academic goals. The conditions, deadlines, and eligibility vary between scholarships, so read the descriptions carefully.

MassBay Foundation Scholarships:

Summer Sessions Scholarship (Annually Funded by the Foundation)

Need-based for summer sessions; The number of scholarships awarded per summer semester will depend on funding.

  • Grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.5 or higher from the Fall/Spring semester
  • $250 scholarship, which may be renewable for a total of 2 summer semesters carrying less than 6 credits
  • $350 scholarship, which may be renewable for a total of 2 summer semesters for 6 credits or more
  • Candidate must be a resident of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • Candidates must submit a typed 250-300 word essay on why they came to college and what their goals for the future are.
  • Must have a recommendation from a MassBay faculty member and/or from the Dean of their Division
  • Complete application submitted by April 15, 2014

$500 John F. McKenzie Scholarship

For $500 for one student in each public high school in MassBay’s service area.

  • Eligibility, Application and Deadline (4pm, June 15, 2014)
  • Grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.5 or higher
  • Accepted to the Massachusetts Bay Community College for the following Fall semester
  • Candidate must be a resident of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • Recommendation from the high school guidance counselor

The President’s Scholars Scholarship (Formerly known as The President's Top Ten Scholarship)

This scholarship is available to two academically superior high school students from the MassBay service area that is entering MassBay. Student must have a Grade Point Average of 3.0 and or be in the top 10% of their high school class. The scholarship covers recipients’ tuition and fees for two full years at the College.


NEW: The Nursing Assistant Program Scholarship (Funded Annually)


The purpose of the nursing assistance scholarship is to provide students in this program with financial support who otherwise could not afford to go to college. It is designed to give those who are financially or socially disadvantaged the help needed to start or restart their education and reach higher levels of employability. The deadline for this scholarship depends on the funding.  Please check with tmortell@massbay.edu before applying.



 2013 – 2014 Health Sciences Scholarship (Funded Annually)

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide students in the Health Science fields with financial support who otherwise could not afford their first year in college. It is designed to give those who are financially or socially disadvantaged the help needed to start or restart their education and reach higher levels of employability. The Spring deadline is April 15, 2014.



The Richard P. Carbone Scholarship Fund (Funded Annually)

The Richard P. Carbone Scholarship was established in memory of Richard P. Carbone, a Wellesley High School Assistant Principal from 1968 until he retired in1985. Toria Carbone, Richard's wife, recalls, "He was most proud that he never gave up on a kid." The scholarship will be awarded to a MassBay student to be used for tuition, books, and non-waiveable fees. The candidates must be residents of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. More than one scholarship will be awarded. Application deadline for the Fall semester is April 15th, and for the Spring, the deadline is October 15th.



Krystle Campbell Scholarship

This scholarship is established in memory of Krystle Campbell, a Medford resident who tragically lost her life at the age of 29 in the Boston Marathon Bombings on April 15, 2013. She was a MassBay graduate of the class of 2005, with an Associate Degree in Business Administration who later transferred to the University of Massachusetts, Boston.

  • Must be a current or prospective full-time student at MassBay and a Business Major
  • Up to $500 to be used towards tuition or non-waive able fees
  • GPA of 2.5 of higher
  • Candidate must be a resident of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • Candidate must submit a typed 250-300 word essay about resiliency, making a difference, generosity of spirit, or overcoming obstacles to achieve a goal.
  • Must have a recommendation from their guidance counselor, teacher or a MassBay Community College faculty member
  • Complete application submitted by April 15, 2014

Information Security Summit Scholarship (Full-Time)

The Information Security Summit Scholarship was created and is supported by the generous sponsors of the Information Security Summit established by Towerwall and MassBay Community College. The sponsors include: Alien Vault, BROCADE, CDW-G, SOPHOS, TREND, VARIOS, VORMETRIC, WAVE, Gigamon, GovConnection Inc., HB Communications, Inc., HTS, McAfee, TCG Network Services, TIBCO LogLogic, and WatchGuard.

Terms of the Scholarship:
This scholarship will be awarded annually:

  • Must have a 3.0 Grade Point Average
  • Must be a full-time student in The Information Security Summit Certificate Program
  • Scholarship is to be used toward tuition and fees
  • Candidate must be a resident of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and a US Citizen
  • Candidates must submit a 250-300 word essay on “What Does Information Security Mean to You?”
  • The application deadline is April 15, 2014.

Information Security Summit Scholarship (Part-Time)

The Information Security Summit Scholarship was created and is supported by the generous sponsors of the Information Security Summit established by Towerwall and MassBay Community College. The sponsors include: Alien Vault, BROCADE, CDW-G, SOPHOS, TREND, VARIOS, VORMETRIC, WAVE, Gigamon, GovConnection Inc., HB Communications, Inc., HTS, McAfee, TCG Network Services, TIBCO LogLogic, and WatchGuard.

Terms of the Scholarship:
This scholarship will be awarded annually:

  • Must have two or more years of professional IT experience
  • Scholarship is to be used toward tuition and fees
  • Candidate must be a resident of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and a US Citizen
  • Candidates must submit a letter of recommendation from a professional contact (employer or client).
  • The application deadline is April 15, 2014.

The General Scholarship Fund

$1,000 scholarships are awarded annually from this fund to needy MassBay students who are in good academic standing. Scholarships are given in the Fall and Spring semesters, the number awarded will depend on funding.  The application deadline for Fall is April 15th and for Spring is October 15th.



The Scholarship for Reentry Students

Minimum age requirement of 25 years old who have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.8 or higher.

  • Up to $500 will be awarded to reentry students who have the highest GPA
  • Renewable for a total of up to 3 semesters
  • Candidate must be a resident of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, carrying a course load minimum of 12 credit hours
  • Maximum expenditure for this scholarship is $2,000 per fiscal year
  • Complete application submitted by April 15, 2014

The Leonce Cadet Berotte Scholarship (Donor Directed)

The Leonce Cadet Berotte Scholarship was established in honor of MassBay’s Past President Berotte Joseph’s father. The scholarship will be given to a deserving international/immigrant dream chaser annually, to be used towards tuition and fees up to $1,000 per semester. The application deadline is April 15, 2014.



Scholar Athlete Scholarship

Given to student athlete(s) who have maintained a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) or higher through the Fall and Spring Semesters. This award will be given at the beginning of the next semester. The number awarded will depend upon funding. This scholarship could be used for tuition or non-waive able fees.

  • GPA of at least 3.0 or higher
  • $500 scholarship
  • Candidate must be a resident of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, carrying a course load minimum of 12 credit hours
  • This is a merit based scholarship and candidate recommendations must come from the Athletic Department Coaches and faculty
  • There is no application necessary and it is awarded in both the Fall and Spring semesters.


4.0 Scholarship

For a 2nd semester freshman who carries a full course load of at least 12 credits and has a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 4.0 from their 1st semester. Scholarship is awarded toward spring semester tuition and non-waive able fees. Subsequent scholarship awards renewed if a 4.0 GPA is maintained.

  • GPA of 4.0
  • $500 scholarship, may be renewable for total of 3 semesters
  • Candidate must be a resident of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, carrying a course load minimum of 12 credit hours
  • There is no application required and it is awarded for both the Fall and Spring semester.


Most Improved Student Scholarship

For up to 10 students as demonstrated by the student’s grade point average (GPA) from the previous semester.

  • Must be in good academic standing
  • $500 scholarship toward tuition, non-waive able fees or textbooks
  • Candidate must be a resident of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, carrying a course load minimum of 12 credit hours


Rosemary Murphy Scholarship (Donor Directed)

The Rosemary Murphy Scholarship was established in memory of Rosemary Murphy, a life-long resident of Needham, MA to be given to a Needham resident. This $500 scholarship is given to one student in the Fall or Spring semester and for two consecutive semesters. The application deadline is April 15th for the Fall semester.



The Virginia F. Sapienza Scholarship Fund

The Virginia F. Sapienza Scholarship Fund was established in honor of former long-time MassBay music professor Virginia Sapienza. The scholarship is a one-semester award given to provide support to a musician or other artist. The scholarship is for $500, and given to one student in the Fall semester and one student in the Spring semester. The application deadline is April 15th for Fall and October 15th for Spring.




The Maxine Elmont Endowed Scholarship Fund (Donor Directed)

The Maxine Elmont Scholarship/s will be awarded for each spring semester to a student/s studying in the Human Services Department at Massachusetts Bay Community College.  The value of the scholarship/s shall be determined each January by the Massachusetts Bay Community College Foundation Inc. Board of Directors Finance Committee.


Fund recipient/s
will be selected exclusively by the Maxine Elmont Scholarship Committee based on the following criteria:

  • Must be a Re-entry student
  • 25 years of age or older
  • Be a Human Services major
  • Have completed a minimum of 6 credits
  • Have a Grade Point Average of 2.0 or higher


Required Submissions:

  • Application form (includes a personal essay detailing future goals as a human services professional)
  • Letter of recommendation
  • Resume


Determination of Award:

  • Application and required materials deadline is April 15, 2014  


Maxine Elmont Scholarship Committee:

  • Linda Schwabe or her designate
  • Chair of the Human Services Department
  • Human Services Faculty Member
  • A past recipient
  • Member of the MassBay Community College Foundation


Massachusetts Bay Community College Foundation, Inc. Single Parent Scholarship

This scholarship was created for MassBay students who are single parents with full/joint custody of their minor children:

  • Up to $500 per semester to be used towards tuition, non-waive able fees or books
  • Must take 6 credits
  • GPA of 2.5 of higher
  • Candidate must be a resident of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • The number awarded per semester will depend on funding.
  • Complete application is due on April 15th for Fall and October 15th for Spring semester.
