MassBay Community College Earns Military Friendly School Recognition

Thursday, October 15, 2015

WELLESLEY HILLS (October 15, 2015) – For the sixth consecutive year, MassBay Community College has earned recognition for its military and veteran friendly policies and campus. MassBay was recognized as a TOP SCHOOL in the 2016 Military Advanced Education Guide to Colleges & Universities research study for its commitment to the men and woman that serve in the United States Armed Forces. Military Advanced Education is a monthly publication that provides information regarding higher education opportunities for military personnel and their spouses. This recognition is based on aspects of particular interest to military students, including flexibility, academic support, financial assistance, and understanding of military culture.

“We are honored by this recognition of the College’s work with military and veteran students,” said Yves Salomon-Fernandez, Interim President. “As an institution, we take very seriously the responsibility of supporting military students to succeed academically by providing a range of support services, in addition to high quality education. They are willing to risk their lives for our country. We owe it to them to ensure that they succeed in and outside of the classroom.”

MassBay currently enrolls more than 140 veteran students each semester.

“Education is one of the most effective ways of integrating our veterans back into civilian life,” said Marie Hahs, Coordinator of Veteran and Military Services. “MassBay strives to offer the best for members of the Armed Forces coming home by providing comprehensive, on-campus support services.”

MassBay offers academic advising, career counseling, and support services to assist our veteran students to succeed. Among the resources available to MassBay’s veteran students is the on-campus Veterans Resource Center, nicknamed “The Bunker” which opened in spring 2011.

“I transitioned from the military to MassBay Community College all in one month,” said Patrick Owen, Vice President of the MassBay Community College Veterans Club. “The MassBay professors, counselors, and students helped my transition to the ‘civilian world’ go very smoothly and the other student veterans offered the guidance and friendships I needed to succeed at school and my new life in the civilian sector.”
