MassBay Students Are Giving "Helping Hands" A Whole New Meaning

Thursday, December 30, 2010

BOSTON, MA (December 29, 2010) - Students from MassBay Community College Therapeutic Massage Program are giving the term “helping hands” a whole new meaning when they will host a two-day massage marathon to raise money for rebuilding the S.O.S. Enfants D’Haiti School in Haiti. The therapeutic event will be held at the MassBay Community College Student Massage Clinic on the Wellesley Campus, Friday, June 11 from 12 to 8 pm and Saturday, June 12 from 9 to 5 p.m.

As a result of the January 2010 earthquake, the S.O.S. Enfants D’Haiti School now holds classes and activities outside under the trees where its walls once stood. The 7.0 scale earthquake caused severe damage to Port-au-Prince, Cydavier, Jacmel, and a number of other regions in Haiti as well.

“MassBay has established the “Rebuilding Haiti Task Force” based upon the outpouring of support and strong level of interest expressed by our students, faculty and staff,” said MassBay President Carole Berotte Joseph, the first Haitian American to head a U.S. institution of higher learning. “MassBay can serve as a convener for important discussions and a leader in processing this new international education initiative.”

The massage event is open to the public and will feature a 1-hour table massage ($40 suggested minimum donation) and a 15-minute seated/clothed massage ($10 suggested minimum donation). All proceeds will benefit MassBay’s Rebuilding Haiti Task Force, which hopes to raise $5000 to provide shelter and supplies for the schoolchildren whose educational accommodations were destroyed as a result of the earthquake. The task force will be hosting a variety of events and fundraisers in the hopes of reaching its goal of raising $10,000 by the end of the semester as well.

You may schedule an appointment via email to MBmassage4Haiti@yahoo.com or call 508-270-4032. Walk-ins will be welcomed as well.
