MassBay Announces Dr. Emmett Price as the 59th Commencement Speaker

Emmet G. Price III WELLESLEY HILLS, Mass. (May 6, 2021) – MassBay Community College is pleased to announce Dr. Emmett G. Price III, of Framingham, MA, will be the keynote speaker for the College’s 59th Commencement exercise on Thursday, May 27, 2021. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Commencement ceremony will be held virtually.

“We are delighted to welcome such an accomplished scholar, orator, and deep thinker to keynote our Commencement exercises this year,” said MassBay President Dr. David Podell. “His life’s work is closely aligned with the equity agenda we’ve been aggressively pursuing here at MassBay, so his Address will be especially relevant to our graduates. He is also a special friend of the College. We are delighted to welcome Dr. Price back to MassBay for this very special event.”

Dr. Price is one of the nation’s leading experts on African American music, music of the African Diaspora, African American culture, the Black church, Christian worship, Black popular culture, hip hop culture, and youth culture. He has spent much of the past few decades writing, lecturing, and studying how to bridge the generational divide. Dr. Price is a well-regarded scholar, educator, and public speaker, who has the rare ability to capture the hearts and minds of the most diverse and versatile audiences with his compassionate sense of humor. He is currently a Professor of Worship, Church, and Culture, and the Executive Director of the Institute for the Study of the Black Christian Experience at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. Dr. Price also served as a member of the MassBay Board of Trustees from 2013-2016.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Dr. Price received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from the University of California, Berkley and earned a Master of Arts and Ph.D. in Music from the University of Pittsburgh. He also earned a Master of Arts in Urban Ministry Leadership from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.
