WELLESLEY HILLS (December 9, 2013) – The men’s basketball team at MassBay Community College is proving to be among the nation’s elite, as they have shot up the national rankings in the early season. At 11-0, the Buccaneers are ranked 3rd in the nation by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) among Division III teams.
“We have a nice blend of youth and experience this year,” said head coach Bill Raynor, an inductee of the New England Basketball Hall of Fame. “We are tenacious on defense, and we are getting strong guard play. And of course we have the big guy in the middle.”
The “big guy” is freshman phenom Macom Macom, a 6’10” center from Sudan who played his high school ball at Lynn Classical. Macom was named national player of the week by the NJCAA last week for two games in which he averaged 19 points, 13.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 4.5 blocks.
Last year’s team captured the NJCAA New England Region XXI Championship and an automatic berth in the National Championship tournament for the third time in five years. They finished as the 5th ranked team in the nation.
Up next for the Buccaneers is a home game on Tuesday December 10th at 7:00 pm vs. Bunker Hill Community College. Bunker Hill has struggled to a 1-10 start to their season. Home games are played on the Framingham campus, 12 Flagg Drive.
