MassBay on Brink of 20 wins as Postseason Approaches

Wednesday, February 13, 2013

FRAMINGHAM (February 13, 2013) – Heading into Tuesday’s contest against the #5 team in the nation, MassBay Community College’s men’s basketball team was 19-4 and had won nine straight games. After a blistering shooting performance by Roxbury Community College, MassBay dropped to 19-5.

Roxbury improved to 19-2 on the season with a 77-74 win over the Buccaneers after shooting 73% in the game. Starting forwards Asim Beazer and Jason Sergenton led the way for the Tigers, shooting a combined 16 for 16 in the game.

Nevertheless, MassBay coach Bill Raynor is optimistic about his team’s prospects in the postseason tournaments. “Based on where we are in the season, I like our chances,” said coach Raynor. “We think we have a group that has a good chance at a regional championship.”

At the conclusion of the regular season, the team will compete in the Massachusetts Community College Athletic Conference tournament on Saturday February 23rd and Sunday February 24th on the campus of Bunker Hill Community College. On Saturday, March 2nd and Sunday March 3rd, the Bucs will travel to Holyoke Community College with a berth in the NJCAA Division III national championship tournament on the line. The winner of the NJCAA New England Region XXI tournament in Holyoke moves on to play for a national championship, held this year on the campus of Sullivan County Community College in Loch Sheldrake, New York.

“We’re a very balanced team,” says Coach Raynor, an inductee into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame. “We’ve got five guys who average between nine and 13 points per game.”

MassBay will play three more regular season games, including Senior Night, the team’s last home game vs. Dean College on Tuesday February 19th at 7:00 pm. All home games are played on the MassBay Framingham campus, 19 Flagg Drive.
