Sculpture by artist Andy Zimmermann entitled Liminal Bloom. This welded and bolted aluminum and polypropylene sculpture, a gift from the artist, was selected by MassBay and donated through The Art Connection in 2013. The piece was originally exhibited at the Christian Science Plaza in Boston.

WELLESLEY HILLS (June 7, 2016) — The Massachusetts Bay Community College is pleased to announce it has received the third and final installment of original art donated through Boston’s non-profit The Art Connection. Since 2013, The Art Connection has donated 78 pieces of artwork created by local artists and gifted by collectors for display on the MassBay Wellesley Hills campus.

“Art changes how we experience our environment,” said MassBay Vice President of Institutional Advancement and Alumni Relations, Mary Shia. “When we are looking at a beautiful painting or sculpture we experience something and it is unique to us. Art – be it a painting or a sculpture transforms the public spaces at MassBay.”

The Art Connection facilitates the choice of art, from artists and collectors, to organizations that may not have the opportunity to experience the transformative possibilities of art in their lives. MassBay has been a three-time recipient of the artwork, with the first donation given in honor of Krystle Campbell, who was killed in the Boston Marathon bombing attack and was a graduate of MassBay Community College. At each placement, a diverse committee comprised of MassBay faculty, staff and students selected artwork that would inspire reflection, stimulate discussion, and reflect the college’s educational mission.

Artwork in a wide array of media is now showcased throughout the college in the library, atrium, hallways, and seating areas and has quickly become part of the fabric of the institution.

"From our initial invitation for MassBay to apply to receive a collection of art in 2013, the partnership between the community college and The Art Connection has been a win-win for both,” said The Art Connection Executive Director and Donating Artist Susan Collings. “We loved honoring Krystle after the Marathon tragedy, so close to The Art Connection office in Boston's South End. Since then, MassBay has been an ideal recipient site for art, from having their broadcast journalism students make a video about our artists donating their work to MassBay joining us each year at our signature ArtBINGO event."

The Art Connection has been donating artwork to area organizations for 20 years and has placed more than 7,000 pieces by more than 425 artists to nearly 400 agencies across Greater Boston.
