Monday, January 7, 2013

WELLESLEY HILLS (January 7, 2013) – Responding to the demands of today’s college student, MassBay Community College announced that they will offer three associate degree programs and two certificate programs this spring that can be completed online. The spring semester begins January 22nd.

“We are fully aware that online learning is in high demand right now, and we’re responding to it,” said MassBay President John O’Donnell. “We are proud to offer for the first time fully online programs that maintain our stringent standards of quality and affordability, while providing a convenient method for working adults to achieve their academic goals.”

MassBay is now offering online Associate in Science Degrees in General Business and Business Administration, and an Associate in Arts Degree in Liberal Arts. Certificates in Management and MassTransfer (a program that guarantees admission and reduced tuition at all Massachusetts public universities to qualifying students) are also now available online. Some proctored exams may be required. Credits earned at MassBay are transferable to many bachelor’s programs around the country.

“We continue to expand our online offerings at MassBay,” said Dean of eLearning Dr. Lynn Hunter. “Roughly 30% of our courses can be taken online, and that number will continue to grow. We feel strongly that learning online will continue to be a preferred method of college goers now and into the future, and as a community college we have a mission to be accessible to anyone who is seeking a college education. At MassBay, we believe providing a robust selection of high quality online courses is a critical component of fulfilling that mission.”

In addition to the five online programs, MassBay is offering more than 60 online or blended courses this semester. One blended course, CS-270 Practical Python Programming, is utilizing edX, the world’s leading online-learning initiative founded by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

MassBay awards associate degrees and certificates in over 60 academic programs in a wide range of career-driven subjects ranging from accounting and automotive technology to forensic DNA science and early childhood education. The College’s facilities in Wellesley Hills, Framingham and Ashland house day, evening and weekend classes that meet the needs of degree-seeking students and career minded life-long learners.
