What is the GEER Fund?

As part of the Education Stabilization Fund through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act for the Governor’s Emergency Education Relief Fund (GEER Fund), the Massachusetts Executive Office of Education is directing funding to community colleges for emergency need-based assistance to students due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Who is Eligible for GEER funding?

A student must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a Massachusetts resident.
  2. Be enrolled, full-or part-time in a degree-seeking program, or eligible certificate program.
  3. Has completed the FAFSA for the current academic year (2020-2021).
  4. Completed the FAFSA verification process (if selected) and has unmet financial need.
  5. Maintain satisfactory academic progress in accordance with MassBay's Financial Aid Office policy.
  6. Has not earned a baccalaureate or professional degree.
  7. Has provided evidence of documented need for assistance, as determined by MassBay's Financial Aid Office.
  8. Student must be enrolled and actively attending courses for the semester for which they are requesting funding.

What can the GEER fund be used for?

GEER funds may be used to assist students under emergency circumstances related to COVID-19 that are proven barriers to a student’s ability to continue their educational pursuits. Funds may be granted to cover the cost of any educationally related expense that falls within the standard Cost of Attendance as determined by the MassBay Financial Aid Office.  Examples of these educationally related expenses are listed below.

  • Direct billed charges (tuition and fees)
  • Books and supplies
  • Room and board (rent, mortgage, food, utility bills)
  • Child care
  • Health care/dental (insurance and/or emergency treatment)
  • Technology expenses (computer, laptop, Wi-Fi)
  • Transportation (automobile expense and repair, commuter pass, fuel)
  • Clothing and other personal expenses

In all circumstances, MassBay has discretion in determining if the “emergency or financial need” is considered a hindrance to the student’s ability to continue their educational pursuit.
