Division of Health Sciences
Dr. Jo Ann Mackey, Dean

The Division of Health Sciences is located in Framingham, Massachusetts and offers a range of high quality, competency-based associate degree and certificate programs that serve the needs of professionals and employers in the dynamic health care field. The programs of the Division of Health Sciences prepare students for rewarding careers in fields that are experiencing excellent growth. The latest technology is used in lecture, laboratory, and off-site clinical and practicum experiences to provide optimal preparation for the workplace.

Health Sciences strives to create a culture that supports students, instills life-long learning, and encourages the pursuit of personal goals. Faculty and administrators in the Division of Health Sciences are committed to helping students become competent and caring professionals who are ready to enter the workforce and make a difference.

Technology is utilized to increase flexibility and access for students and to provide additional opportunities for learning and training, keeping in mind a range of learning styles. Health Sciences programs use web-based formats for instruction and study groups, as well as a hands-on Patient Simulation Center. The center features three patient simulators that can mimic many encounters that students will face in the clinical environment. Patient simulation is currently being used by students in the Nursing, Paramedic, Surgical Technology and Physical Therapist Assistant programs. Most recently, the Radiographic Technology program added a patient simulator specifically designed for x-ray practice to its lab. Overall, students have found that using the patient simulators in the laboratory has helped them prepare for working with patients.

Clinical and practicum experiences are essential for students to gain the knowledge and experience working in the health field. In accordance with Massachusetts state law and the College’s clinical and practicum agreements, students accepted into programs of the Division of Health Sciences are required to submit the following documentation on or before the first day of class. These requirements are in place to ensure student and patient/client safety. Failure to submit these forms on time may result in the student being withdrawn from the program.

1. Report of Medical History

2. Authorization for Release of Medical Information Form

3. Technical Performance Standards Form (Health Students Only) The technical performance standards form addresses the physical requirements of most health care professions. Students are to review the list of requirements for their program, and if they have any doubts or questions, consult with their health care provider about their ability to perform the task, skill, and/or function. Students must sign and return form to the Division of Health Sciences. Should the student or health care provider feel that some form of accommodation may be needed to perform any of the requirements, the student is advised to contact the College’s Office for Disabilities.

4. CPR Certification (All Students) – Students must present evidence of successful completion of the appropriate level of CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation). The only CPR certifications that are acceptable for health students are: the “Health Care Provider” from the American Heart Association (AHA), and the “Professional Rescuer” from the American Red Cross or the National Safety Council.

It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that a legible copy of his/her signed current card is on file in the Division of Health Sciences, and that his/her CPR certification remains current throughout enrollment in the program. Students are not allowed to attend clinical or practicum with an expired CPR card. Renewal training is required as determined by the agency through which the student earned your CPR certification.

MassBay offers CPR Training for Health Care Providers through the Division of Community and Corporate Education. Please refer to the Schedule of Classes for dates and times. Students may also find a CPR course convenient to them through the American Heart Association and American Red Cross websites, or by contacting their local hospital.

5. CORI and SORI Release forms – Students participating in academic programs that include a clinical affiliation or field-based learning component, such as with a private or public health care provider, will be subject to a search of records for past criminal or sexual offenses, known as the CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) and SORI (Sex Offender Registry Information) checks. CORI and SORI checks will be conducted at program orientations and at the beginning of every semester thereafter. Students will be asked to submit a copy of their driver’s license along with their CORI release form. Students must clear the CORI and SORI checks in order to attend clinical or practicum assignments. For more information about CORI and SORI checks, please consult the Massachusetts State website.

Students who indicate a residence other than Massachusetts on their application form or have recently moved from another state will be subject to CORI and SORI checks in that state.

Please note:

Some clinical facilities where students will be assigned may require additional information and/or screenings prior to clinical placement. Examples include:
- Submission of social security number
- Finger-printing
- Drug testing
- CORI checks
- Additional immunizations
