President

John O’Donnell, Ph.D.

Dr. John O’Donnell began his tenure as president of Massachusetts Bay Community College in August of 2011. A strong proponent of community colleges, he believes that community colleges are at the core of social and economic progress for America.

Prior to his presidency at Massachusetts Bay Community College, Dr. O’Donnell served in the following positions:  president of Stark State College, an Ohio public community college;  Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the New Hampshire Community Technical College System, where, in this position, he also served as a member of the New Hampshire Governor’s Cabinet; and president of the New Hampshire Community Technical College at Manchester, Stratham, and the Pease International Trade Port.

During his career, he has taught psychology at the associate, baccalaureate, and graduate levels and has been in practice as a psychologist.

MassBay’s president describes himself as a community college professional whose own career was made possible through access to affordable education. He received his BA in history from Queens College of the City University of New York and his MEd and PhD from Boston College.
