Student Orientation Advising & Registration (SOAR)

Why should I attend an Orientation?

SOAR (Student Orientation Advising & Registration) will provide you with the tools you need to succeed at MassBay. As part of the enrollment process, all new students should participate in SOAR. Every student has unique needs, so we have designed a SOAR process that will meet YOUR specific goals as a student at MassBay!

However, no matter what your goal is at MassBay, we strongly recommend that all new students attend an Orientation as part of the SOAR Process. When you attend a New Student Orientation, you are taking an important step in your academic journey. Starting off on the right track is the best way to ensure success as a MassBay student.

To Sign Up for an Orientation Option that is Right for YOU, review the following MassBay orientation options:

OPTION 1: Online Orientation

Online orientation is one of the options available to MassBay students. This option may work well for you if you fit into one of the categories listed below or if you have already attended an on campus orientation and simply want to review the information. You should also be very comfortable using a computer and someone who learns well in an online environment. This option is designed primarily for students:

  • Planning to complete one of our many Certificate Programs
  • Taking online only courses or non-credits courses
  • Earning credits and planning to transfer prior to completing a degree or certificate
  • Completing prerequisite courses for credit at another institution
  • Unable to attend an in-person, on campus SOAR (Option 2)

Please keep in mind that you may still need to visit campus for Placement Testing and to register for your courses. Students who have completed college level Math and/or English courses may be eligible to waive placement testing. Click HERE for more information.

OPTION 2: New Student Orientation on campus

If you are new to MassBay and/or planning to complete an Associate Degree Program at the College, New Student Orientation on campus is the best option for you. For most students, the first step in the SOAR process is to complete your Placement Testing. If you have not yet taken your Placement Test or have questions about this process, please click here for Placement Testing Information & Sign-up. Students who have completed college level Math and/or English courses may be eligible to waive Placement testing. You can also call 781-239-2632 for more information.

At New Student Orientation on campus  you will:

  • Explore your academic, career, and transfer goals with MassBay Academic Advisors and faculty
  • Meet fellow NEW MassBay students as well as faculty and staff
  • Plan your first semester schedule, register for courses, and get your MassBay student ID
  • Become familiar with MassBay’s technology, including your email, student account, and classroom tools
  • Learn about the extracurricular and leadership opportunities available to you
  • Be introduced to a wide range of support services

This orientation option takes about 5 hours and they are offered on weekdays, evenings, and occasional weekends. We strongly encourage all new students to attend one of these orientations.
