Massbay Comunity College

President Podell: Statement on Executive Order on Immigration

President Trump’s recent executive order on immigration has left many in our community anxious about its impact on our students’ lives and on our ability as a public institution to serve any and all students who want to pursue their education at MassBay.

Our richly diverse community is comprised of students from nearly 50 countries, a variety of racial and religious backgrounds, as well as immigration statuses. Our students include international students studying here with F-1 visas, students and faculty with refugee status, as well as undocumented immigrants with federal protection through the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Act (DACA). Any major change to federal immigration policy has the potential for enormous impact for many members of our community.

Our core values guide us to honor and value the voice and contributions of every member of this College, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, or religious background. In these uncertain times, I want every student to be certain in the fact that MassBay will remain committed to providing a safe, supportive, and inclusive community for all.

The Commonwealth’s leaders at the highest levels, from our Governor to the Commissioner of Higher Education, have expressed their concerns about the potential harm of the executive order on our institutions and the students we serve. I stand with them in advocating for all of our students who study here and wish to pursue their education at MassBay.

David Podell, Ph.D.
President
