MassBay Mourns Loss of Long-Time Faculty Member Dr. Maxine Elmont

WELLESLEY HILLS, MA (October 2017) – MassBay Community College is mourning the loss of long-time faculty member Dr. Maxine Elmont, who passed away on August 13th. Dr. Maxine ElmontIn March 2016, Dr. Elmont was honored at the National Association for Developmental Education (NADE) conference in California, recognized for her years of service and dedication to excellence in developmental education with the creation of a new award in her name. The Maxine Elmont Award for Outstanding Alumnus of a Career Associate Program recognizes an alumnus who distinguishes themselves in an education career and other areas of life. The first recipient of the award was MassBay alumni Walter Bachelder of Framingham. Dr. Elmont was a longtime chair of the NADE’s Workforce Development SPIN, a NADE award winner and a life-time NADE Chapter member of Learning Assistance Association of New England (LAANE).

Dr. Elmont earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Suffolk University, her Masters of Education at Boston University and her Doctoral degree in Education from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. In light of the fact that she returned to college later in life, the Dr. Maxine Elmont Endowed Scholarship Fund was established to support a student 25 years or older who are re-entering college and majoring in Human Services at MassBay. Dr. Elmont would tell family and friends to forgo presents on birthdays and holidays and to instead donate to student scholarships at MassBay. She was also known for purchasing items and have items donated to raffle off, raising funds for scholarships. The scholarship bearing her name is $500 and is given out every semester.

On Wednesday, November 8, 2017 the MassBay Community will gather at 5:30PM in the Library Atrium on the Wellesley Hills campus to celebrate Maxine’s life and honor her service to the College.
