"It was really tough, leaving my family, my friends and my girlfriend behind."

Age: 31
Hometown: Lima, Peru

Rafael de la Puente is on a roll right now. Because he registered early for fall 2012 classes, he was automatically eligible to win a pair of Red Sox tickets this summer. He is the winner of the first of six drawings MassBay is holding.

A big baseball fan, Rafael chose the August 27th game against the Kansas City Royals. As it turns out, August 27th is an important date for Rafael. Coming to America in 2001 from his native Lima, Peru, Rafael, 31, moved from New Jersey to Florida before settling in Dedham in 2009. “It was really tough, leaving my family, my friends and my girlfriend behind,” says Rafael. He wound up marrying someone he met in America in 2005 .

By the time he moved to Dedham, his first marriage had dissipated, and he began thinking about his old girlfriend back in Peru. They were reunited during a three-month visit back to Lima in 2010. Today, they are engaged to be married.

Rafael is a very busy man these days. In addition to settling the paperwork to arrange for his fiancée Gladys Fabiola, to come to America, planning for a June wedding, and arranging for his family to travel to America for the special day, Rafael works two jobs while attending MassBay. “I am at school on Tuesdays and Thursdays,” Rafael explains. “The other days I’m working.” Rafael is a waiter at an assistant living facility in Cleveland Circle from 8am – 7pm, and then cleans offices from 9pm – 1am. He is driven in his studies because as he says “I need a better job.”

An accounting major, Rafael is on track to graduate in 2013. He came to MassBay in 2009 at the recommendation of friends and has enjoyed it. “I play on the soccer team, and there are good players and an excellent coach,” he says enthusiastically. He finds people here to be “friendly and polite. Very helpful.”

As for August 27th? Not only will he enjoy the game at Fenway, he will also be celebrating his own birthday and that of his newlywed wife, Gladys!

Congratulations Rafael – enjoy the game!!

Rafael de la Puente is an Accounting major, scheduled to graduate MassBay in May, 2013. He is the first winner of the Red Sox ticket promotion to reward returning students who register for fall classes before Commencement in May, 2012.
