Professor Kennedy earned his BA in 1978 from Holy Cross. He earned his Master of Science in Organic Chemistry in 1980 from Purdue University. He taught high school from 1980 through 1984. He has been a member of the Chemistry faculty at MassBay since 1984. He has also taught Environmental Science at MassBay and Organic Chemistry at Worcester State University.

Professor Kennedy has presented several work-shops on topics such as, conducting lecture demonstrations, using PowerPoint in lectures, and using molecular modeling to enhance learning. He has received several grants to investigate various topics related to enhancing the classroom experience and learning. He is the author of ancillary material, particularly PowerPoint lecture presentations, for several current Introductory and General Chemistry text books.

Outside of MassBay, Professor Kennedy studies and teaches martial arts. He earned his Black Belt in 2006.
