Delano V. Young, PhD
AdjunctFaculty of Chemistry
|Dr. Young has been teaching part-time as an adjunct at MBCC since 2007. He retired from full time work in 2006 after 22 years as a research scientist/manager, working in the local biotech/pharmaceutical industry. During that period, he served in various capacities, for example, as a Director at Damon Biotech, a Head of Dept. at Abbott Biotech, a Section Head at NitroMed, and a Senior Scientist at Transkaryotic Therapies. His industrial research involved cellular biochemistry, in vitro pharmacology, drug discovery/evaluation, large scale protein expression in mammalian cells, gene therapy, applied immunology, virology, contract toxicology testing and other related areas. Prior to his industrial career Dr. Young was an assistant professor of biochemistry in the Dept. of Chemistry of Boston University for nearly nine years. At BU his research interests focused on understanding the nutritional needs and growth factor requirements of cancer cells; as the principal investigator this research was funded by NIH grants.|
Dr. Young’s education occurred at Stanford University where he received a B.S. in chemistry and Columbia University in New York which awarded him a Ph.D. in biochemistry. He did his postdoctoral work at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California.
