Welcome to MassBay Community College, where realizing your dreams is indeed our mission. The College is student-centered, affordable, and conveniently located in the metropolitan Boston and the MetroWest regions. We are a close-knit learning community committed to providing our students with the best faculty, the highest quality of support services as well as exposure to the elements of a liberal education that support their transfer, career and life aspirations.
More than 5,000 students attend classes on our campuses in Wellesley Hills and Framingham or at our Technology Center in Ashland. Our student body is diverse, 24 percent are people of color and over half are women. Twenty-five percent of our students are the first in their family to attend college.
In order for our students to be competitive and successful in an increasingly global economy, we must ensure that multicultural values permeate our College curricula. I value diversity in every sense of the word and believe that diversity promotes personal growth, strengthens our communities, and enriches the educational experiences of our students. I am committed to infusing our community and curricula with multicultural values so that you will be prepared to truly succeed. We are one of very few community colleges in the Commonwealth offering our students an opportunity to study abroad.
Whether you seek a certificate, an associate degree or an opportunity to strengthen your skills, MassBay has the courses you need. We offer students a wide array of programs including 35 associate degree programs and 27 certificate programs. We are the only community-college in Massachusetts to offer a state-of-the art, credit-bearing automotive technology program. For many students, MassBay Community College’s degree and certificate programs in the allied health professions, criminal justice, and automotive offer a pathway to enhanced employment opportunities. For others, MassBay is the first-step to a four-year institution such as Framingham State, UMass-Boston, Wellesley College, and many other leading universities and colleges.
Academic excellence takes many forms at MassBay. The College is the only community college in the nation to consistently produce Barry M. Goldwater Scholars – the premier national undergraduate award recognizing academic excellence in science and mathematics. As of February 2007, 14 MassBay students have received the award.
Our honors classes provide rigorous courses that are similar to those found at top tier four-year institutions. A college-wide service learning initiative connects our classrooms to real-life needs in our communities. Students can receive scholarships for engaging in service learning and have participated in projects including farmers markets, soup kitchens, and building homes with Habitat for Humanity. MassBay’s learning communities offer an interdisciplinary approach to teaching in which students approach the same subject matter through the lenses of various disciplines. Learning communities at MassBay help students achieve academic success.
MassBay offers learning-to-career opportunities in partnership with local businesses and industries including, General Motors, Toyota, BMW, Staples, BJ’s, Sullivan Tire, Keyspan, New England Baptist Hospital, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and Newton Wellesley Hospital. In 2006, 1,532 students enrolled in workforce development courses. Our health profession students are affiliated with over 120 area healthcare facilities where they receive supervised instruction during clinical placements and are prepared to join the healthcare workforce.
At MassBay we recognize the importance of the Arts. We are proud to share a cultural alliance with the communities we serve. Our artists-in-residence program includes the Wellesley Symphony Orchestra, Newton Country Players, the All About Us Children’s Theater, and the MetroWest Youth Symphony Orchestra. We also host a multicultural film festival each February.
